Our Educational Philosophy:
Our teachers work to create a preschool classroom based on play, nurturing care and respect for all children and all people. In this atmosphere, children are supported in their endeavors to pose questions, seek solutions, develop friendships and explore their creative abilities. The classroom provides a variety of opportunities for children to expand on their current knowledge through painting, drawing, writing, playing, listening to music, working with sand, building with blocks, reading and listening to stories, experiencing math and science, and recreating life experiences through dramatic play. The classroom spaceis designed to encourage participation, not only in self-directed small group activities (through the use of learning centers), but also through teacher-directed large group experiences, such as meeting time, music and circle games.

Meet the Teachers:
Susan Giasson - Head Teacher Morning Program
Sue is in her 10th year of teaching at TCS. Sue attended St. Michael's College where she received a Master's Degree in Education with a concentration in Early Childhood Curriculum. She is a well-rounded teacher with a wide variety of interests but concentrates on developing reading, art and music skills. Sue values the cooperative pre-school model, which allows her to work closely with families, both in the classroom and on the Board of Directors. Moreover, she has had the opportunity to participate in the education of multiple children in some families. "I have known many of the children I teach today since they were infants. I enjoy when my former students return and I can see how they have grown and changed. I see myself as a guide. This is the first school experience for many children and their first time away from the home environment. I enjoy helping students navigate new experiences." Outside of the classroom, Sue is an avid golfer. She also enjoys cooking and reading.
Judy Cross - Head Teacher Morning Program
Judy has been with TCS for 5 years, having completed her BA at Syracuse University and received a teaching certificate from St. Michael's. She is passionate about educating young children and sharing her love for reading with them. Judy appreciates parent input and participation both in and out of the classroom and feels it strengthens the learning environment. "All children are able to learn. It is our responsibility to provide a stimulating environment and to assist children in reaching their full potential." Judy is a nature lover. When not teaching, she spends time outside gardening, snowshoeing and taking walks with her husband and two dogs.
Christina Marshall - Head Teacher Afternoon Program
Christina was raised in northwest Connecticut and moved to VT after attending college in New Hampshire. She graduated from Keene State with a BS in Early Childhood Education (Social Science focus) and is a licensed teacher through the state of VT. Raised by teachers (her mother is an art teacher and her dad is a freelance musician and world music teacher), she has been interested in working with young children and early education for a long time. Christina worked as head summer camp counselor during high school and in the Child Development Center while a student at Keene State. Christina is thrilled to be teaching at TCS and was drawn to its educational philosophy, NAEYC accreditation, beautiful classrooms, and the parent cooperative model. "Young children thrive in a caring, nurturing environment where they are encouraged to explore, develop positive relationships, be creative, experience the joy of learning and to gain a sense of community." Outside of work, Christina enjoys outdoor activities (nature walks, biking and hiking), music and cooking.
Katie Herbert - Assistant Teacher Afternoon Program
Katie graduated from Saint Michael's College in 2008 as a double major in Elementary Education and American Studies. Currently she is a Resident Director at Saint Michael's while pursuing a Master's of Education. Katie's personal educational philosophy focuses on progressive student-centered learning based upon student inquires. This approach keeps children engaged in their own learning and helps them become life long learners. "Everyday there is a new quote or action that a child does that I love and I say to myself 'This is why I love working here'." Katie believes that all the children are incredibly creative artists -mini Picasso's- and it is the responsibility of parents and teachers is to keep their creativity alive. One of her favorite things to do with the children is dramatic play! When Katie is away from the classroom, she enjoys all the beautiful things that Vermont has to offer and she loves to paint. She also makes time to volunteer and serve others. In May, Katie is headed to Kolkata, India to work in Mother Teresa's homes.
Roberta Couture - Administrator
Roberta has a Bachelors degree in Education from The University of Vermont. She came to TCS in 2006 after 12 years of sales support at a local brokerage office. Her work experience includes banking, financial planning, customer service and sales. As the TCS administrator Roberta has had the opportunity to learn new software programs, design brochures, facilitate licensing and accreditation and, perhaps most importantly, to meet some fantastic people. When asked what she enjoys most about the TCS community Roberta remarked, "I really enjoy working with the different families that come through TCS." Outside of TCS, Roberta enjoys spending time with her daughters, gardening, cooking, reading and working on home improvement projects with her family.
